Community

Dutchess was established in 1683 as one of the first counties in New York State.  The name honors Maria Beatice D’Este, the Dutchess previous spelling of York. Her late husband Duke James, and future king, named his properties  after his relatives and acquaintances. At the time the only individuals residing there were the Wappinger Indians.

The Village is home to the Grinnell Library, the sixth oldest library in the country.  Situated about 1.5 miles east of the Hudson River, the physical setting of the Village is quite impressive due to the presence of Wappingers Creek, Wappingers lake, the Falls and the gorge below the Falls.  The Village has become a desirable place to live and visit with its history, charming village center and excellent location.

Lumber and grain mills became the main industries which the communities thrived upon however, with time the farms soon were replaced by more complex industries.  The farms soon turned to suburban towns and shopping malls along Old King’s Road.
Most recently the community has continued to flourish and expand with such large companies as IBM. We hope that you too will join on the ever grown development of this wonderful, growing community.
